We’re recruiting: Writers of Colour

Do you like to write about film and performance? Our Responses team wants to hear from you!

WHAT

The Fringe of Colour Responses project is a daring platform dedicated to writing about performance art and film in a way that challenges the more quantitative-oriented culture of reviewing. The project exists alongside our hybrid arts festival, Fringe of Colour Films, providing written pieces about each production in the festival programme which aim to give audiences a deeper understanding and appreciation of the work.

Fringe of Colour Responses is somewhere between a review and a personal essay – we don’t deal out stars. We want to give writers the chance to respond to shows that move or challenge them, as they think about the work in its wider context. We encourage our writers to think about how the work they are responding to has affected them personally and to draw inspiration from their own lives, in order to write subjectively about these productions.

WHO

We are seeking to recruit additional Black writers and Writers of Colour to join our brilliant Responses team, lead by Editorial Director Tomiwa Folorunso and Sub-editor Katie Goh. Writers will respond to work appearing at Fringe of Colour Films 2023 through essays that will be published on our website. You can find the Responses from our previous festivals here.

We especially welcome applications from writers who are blind or vision-impaired and would use Audio Descriptions to enjoy film, and writers who are d/Deaf and would use British Sign Language interpretations. Using ADs and BSL for film are specific, unreplicatable experiences and we are interested in publishing Responses that reflect their usage.

The Responses project exists to give space to Black people and People of Colour to reflect on art that speaks to their own experiences and identities. Please do not apply for this role if you are not Black or a Person of Colour.

WHEN

Writers must be passionate about performance art and film, and must be available to watch or listen to films and write at least one Response between April and June.

If you would like to write for us, please send a personal statement and two or three examples of written work, one of which must be published, to Tomiwa Folorunso at tomiwa@fringeofcolour.co.uk.

Deadline: 31 March

Pay: £125 per Response (approximately 800 - 1,000 words)

Thank you!
