How is Fringe of Colour Films a "hybrid festival"?

Fringe of Colour Films 2023 will be taking place both online, right here on our website, and at Summerhall in Edinburgh. We seek to create identical Online and In-Person programmes, meaning all the content available for one programme will also be available for the other. This is a radical approach to running a festival during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has seen a number of festivals going back on some of the progress they made when they had to rethink their in-person festivals for a virtual space. Online programmes have taken the hit, in favour of re-growing in-person events.

We aim to provide our Online and In-Person audiences with the same experience possible, by thinking about how every single screening and event can be made to work in both spaces. At times, this might mean taking slightly different approaches for these programmes, to meaningfully consider what each set of audiences would find enjoyable and entertaining.

How do I access the festival?

You can get access to Fringe of Colour Films by creating an account right here on our website. You’ll need to sign up with your email address, create a password and buying a Pass.

We have a number of different Pass options, split into two types - the Online Passes and the In-Person Passes. Online Passes provide access to the full online programme, while In-Person Passes provide access to both the Online and In-Person programmes.

To create an account and buy a Pass, head over to our Passes and Tickets page.

Passes from Fringe of Colour Films 2021 will not be valid for 2023.

What does my Pass give me access to?

A Pass gives you access to the whole festival, from the moment you obtain one till the very last minute of the festival. It is a one-time payment and we will not charge you beyond this. You do not have to obtain a new Pass for each new day of the festival or for individual films and events.

Why is there a paywall?

Fringe of Colour is a community project that relies mostly on grants from public funding bodies and donations. We are also required to make a small amount of income from Pass sales to keep ourselves afloat.

The cost of your Pass will help make sure everyone involved in Fringe of Colour Films is paid fairly for their work.

Can I get a free Pass?

We offer free Passes to any Black people or People of Colour who need them, and any carers or support workers of disabled audience members. To find out how to get a free Pass, visit our Booking Information page.

In what way are the films accessible?

All our films for Fringe of Colour 2023 will have English captions or subtitles, British Sign Language interpretations and audio descriptions. If you are struggling with getting any of these features to work, firstly try refreshing the page and then contact Technical Director jess@fringeofcolour.co.uk for more support if you need it.

I have mobility restrictions - what will it be like to navigate Summerhall?

As we announce our programme, we will be able to provide in-depth information about the accessibily of the specific spaces we will be using at Summerhall. Summerhall have provided full specifications of the building’s accessibility on their website.

I'm not UK-based, can I still access the festival?

Yes! Online Passes provide access to Fringe of Colour Films for viewers anywhere in the world. The full programme will be available regardless of your location, as none of the productions in the programme will be geo-locked for the festival. If you are having any difficulties creating an account due to your location or card type, send our Technical Director an email at jess@fringeofcolour.co.uk.

What is my money going towards?

Your contributions, either through buying a Pass or donating to the project, all go towards making our work possible. Fringe of Colour Films is not a profit-making endeavour. Instead, we ensure that everyone involved is paid fairly and equally for their work. We have put together a summary of how we managed our funds in 2021 - take a look!
